Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. What does "close contact" mean?

    A. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines "close contact" as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset until the time the patient is isolated.

    Q. Why quarantine?

    A. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, COCISD developed quarantine procedures based on state health department, CDC and Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines.

    Q. What are the quarantine procedures?

    A. Here are the COCISD quarantine procedures:

    1. We are notified that someone who was on campus tested positive for COVID-19.
    2. An investigation is opened to find out who was in close contact with the infected person.
    3. Every person who is identified as a close contact is contacted.
      1. If the close contact person is on campus, they must leave campus as soon as possible.
      2. If the close contact person is at home, we notify them via phone call, email and text, along with options for return to campus.
      3. If the close contact is a student, parents are notified via phone call, email and text, along with options for return to campus.
    4. The close contact is required to stay at home for a specified amount of time, in order to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms until the incubation period of the virus has passed.
    5. Students who are close contacts are switched to asynchronous online learning at home while quarantined.

    Q. How long does quarantine last?

    A. COVID-19 close contacts must quarantine at home until ONE of the following three options is met:

    • 14 days after the last close contact have passed, as long as they do not have symptoms.

    OR

    • *10 days after the last close contact have passed, as long as they do not have symptoms and continue to monitor for symptoms through the 14th day after exposure.

    OR

    • *7 days after the last close contact have passed, if they have gotten a negative COVID-19 test result that was taken at least 6 days after the exposure. If this option is chosen, your child must be cleared before returning to campus. Call the campus clinic before sending your child back to school.

*If individuals return to school from shorter than 14 day stay-at-home windows, they should regularly monitor themselves for symptoms to ensure they remain symptom-free, and take appropriate precautions (e.g., consistent and proper mask usage, social distancing) for the duration of the 14-day incubation period.

See below for a quick reference chart to calculate the number of days quarantine will last based on the last date of the exposure to the virus.
