Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) promotes student wellness

Child Nutrition Director Elizabeth "Dawn" Smith is the current chairperson of the COCISD SHAC, which also includes parents, campus representatives, and new COCISD Health and Wellness Director Kristi Benestante.

Texas law requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district. The group is appointed by the district and should include members from different areas of the community, parents and school staff. SHACs assist school districts with research, planning, and implementation of programs that incorporate the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model, with the goal of coordinating policy, process and practice to improve student learning and health.

Our SHAC meets four times a year and provides recommendations to the COCISD Board of Trustees for district health policies and protocols,  based on input from its members. This year’s focus is on allergy protocols and smart snacks in schools.

Parents/guardians and community members who are interested in participating are invited to come to the next SHAC meeting at the COCISD administration building on 3/25/19 at 4:15 p.m. For more information, contact Dawn Smith at, or visit the district website at > Departments > Health & Wellness > Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC).
