STAAR 2.0 - What's the Latest
The latest news from TEA on STAAR Testing
The Texas legislature passed House Bill (HB) 3906 in 2019, which provided for the redesign of the STAAR test. As shown on TEA's Assessment Initiatives webpage, the changes include:
- Transitioning to online assessments by the 2022–23 school year
- Adding new item types and capping the percentage of multiple-choice items
- Eliminating stand-alone writing assessments for grades 4 and 7 and incorporating cross-curricular passages to assess new reading language arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
TEA has provided a STAAR Redesign section on its website with videos and additional information on the new test/testing procedures. There is also a section entitled Preliminary Spring 2023 STAAR Blueprints and RLA Assessed Curriculum with even more details and test samples.TEA's Texas Assessment Practice and Released Tests webpage also has a preview available of the new STAAR Math item types that will go into effect in the 2022-2023 school year.
