Leland Melvin

"I think playing football, where you work together as a team, helps you become a better astronaut. The same non-verbal communication skills in the field can be used on a shuttle flight deck." Leland D. Melvin, NASA Astronaut
Born in Virginia in 1964, Leland Moore is a former professional football player, engineer and NASA astronaut.

Making the most of a football scholarship to the University of Richmond, Moore earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry while playing as a wide receiver for the Richmond Spiders. After graduation, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions, but injuries ended what would have been a promising career in the NFL.

Not to be discouraged, Melvin returned to school and earned a Master of Science degree in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Virginia. He went on to work at NASA and was eventually selected for the astronaut program. Melvin flew two missions on the Space Shuttle Atlantis. He is the only person to have been drafted into the NFL who has flown in space.

Leland Melvin has gone on to become an author, public speaker and inspirational proponent of education around the world. His website states: "He uses his life story as an athlete, astronaut, scientist, engineer, photographer, and musician to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) careers.
